One thing about me is I’m a sucker for a good candle. I know this is something that my friends and I have in common and thought, why not incorporate it into my Galentine’s celebration!
I think at first thought, people are initially intimidated by the idea of making their own candles. But you’d be surprised to know just how easy it is once you get the hang out of it. So, to help my fellow DIY girlies out, I created some step-by-step instructions to help ensure your candles come out perfect every single time.
First and foremost, you’ll need to make sure you have all the right supplies. For my first candle making session I ordered a complete DIY Candle Making set off Amazon to make it easier for myself. But for Galentine’s I wanted to make candles that were a little more festive. See my full listing below for all of my must-haves for the perfect Gal-themed candles.
Supplies needed
- Candle containers – I used these adorable little heart-shaped containers
- Wax – I ordered some generic beeswax
- Wax pouring pot
- Wicks
- Thermometer
- Candle dye (optional)
- Essential Oil (optional)
- Embellishments, i.e. sparkles, florals, etc. (optional)
Once you have all your supplies together. You can start your candle making process. And don’t let the lengthy instructions scare you, I promise it’s as easy as baking a box cake!
Instructions
- First you’ll need to prep the candle containers.
- Unpeel the sticky tab at the bottom of the wick and place into the candle container.
- Place the wick holder to hold up the wicks. If you don’t have a wick holder, two chopsticks will also work to help place and hold your wicks straight-up once inserted.
- Fill a pot of water and bring it to a boil.
- While your water is boiling, add your desired waxes to your melting pot.
- Once the water is at a boil, place the melting pot in the water (DO NOT SUBMERGE).
- Using your thermometer, ensure the wax is at 165 degrees before removing.
- Once warm enough, pour the hot wax into your candle jars/tins.
- If you’re using essential oils or candle dye, add a couple of small drops/pieces while the wax is still hot.
- Embellish your wax as you please with florals, sparkles or any other flame-safe additions.
- Once your wax is mostly hardened, trim the wicks down to a reasonable height.
- Allow at least one full hour for the candle to cool before transporting and at least four hours before using.
And just like that, you’re officially a candle connoisseur!
Making candles is a quick and yet fulfilling craft that not only saves you money but is also an easy way to satisfy your DIY itch. Before you know it, you’ll have a collection of candles that challenges even the biggest B&BW lover!
