It’s officially that time of year! As the New Year quickly approaches, it’s time to start getting your house in order. I absolutely live by the rule of going into the New Year with a clean and tidy home. To help myself (and you) get started and hopefully avoid forgetting any little areas, I created a Deep-Clean Checklist that’s broken out by all the must-clean areas.
If you’re just looking for a helpful way to stay on task and make sure you don’t miss anything, then I suggest downloading the checklist and getting straight to your cleaning! But, if you want to know some of my own helpful tips and tricks, keep reading below to find out my own personal routine for a good deep-clean.
Bedroom
This may seem controversial, but I always prefer to start my cleaning routine in my bedrooms. I don’t know how, but I always seem to have some laundry that needs to get done and it’s more time efficient to get that laundry started before I dive into any other parts of my home. Also, nothing makes me more upset then finishing my cleaning routine and realizing my bedding isn’t dry yet. By starting in the bedroom, I can work my way backwards and reward myself with a cozy bed to lay down in once I’m finished.
- Wash sheets/comforters and any other dirty laundry
- Clean out under the bed
- Flip the mattress (if applicable)
- Disinfect/steam the mattress
- Sort clothes to keep or donate
Bathroom
Next, I move into the bathrooms to really get down to business early on. I prefer to work on the bathrooms at the beginning of my cleaning routine to allow all of the chemicals to really do their thing and to also dissipate before it’s time for me to shower later that night.
- Replace shower curtain liner
- Scrub the shower and tub
- Disinfect sinks and counters
- Organize under the sink
- Clear out unused items (if you haven’t used it in a year, do you really need it?)
- Deep clean toilets
- Wash shower mats and bath rugs
- Clean trashcan
- Clear sink and shower drains of hair/other gunk
Kitchen
After I loose a couple of brain cells from the fumes in the bathroom, I move on to the kitchen. I’m not gonna lie, the kitchen is always the hardest area for me. Simply just looking at dishes drains me, but we gotta do what we gotta do. I recommend starting with cleaning out your fridge first, so that any dirty Tupperware can go straight into the dishwasher before you start the cycle.
- Clean out the fridge (this includes throwing out expired food and disinfecting shelves)
- Organize the pantry and cabinets
- Clean the microware
- Disinfect trashcans
- Wipe down all surfaces
- Sweep behind all large appliances
- Wash all dirty dishes
Living room
The living room is always one of my favorite spaces to clean because it’s also the easiest for me to clean. But before you dive into the living room, I would go ahead and switch over your laundry if you haven’t done so already.
- Vacuum in between couch cushions
- Wash throw blankets and pillows
- Clean out the fireplace
- Wipe down all electronics
- Disinfect the coffee and end tables
Office
My absolute favorite room in my house is my office. I don’t know what it quite is but I just love being in my office, even when I’m not working or crafting. It’s just a comforting space I guess. It’s also the room I spend the least amount of time cleaning.
- Clean out old files and papers
- Organize supplies (paper, crafting, etc.)
- Replace printer ink and paper
Around Your Home
Now that you’ve tackled the specific needs for every room in your home, it’s time to do an overall clean. I recommend starting with any dusting that you may need to do so that once you sweep and mop you’re not yelling at yourself for having to go back and do it again.
- Clean all vents
- Dust all furniture, shelves, fans and light fixtures
- Replace air filter (you should definitely be doing this more than once a year 😊)
- Sweep and mop floors
- Check smoke and CO2 detectors and replace batteries as needed
- Vacuum carpets and rugs
- Wipe down baseboards
New year, cleaner you!
Cars
If there’s anything my friends know me for, it’s for the “sorry my car’s dirty” line I use 99% of the time. I honestly don’t know how it happens, but my car goes from having a pair of shoes and an extra jacket to half of my closet in the span of a week. That being said, I always start the year off with a clean car and try to see how long I can last.
- Clean out junk/unneccessary items from car
- Disinfect all surfaces and handles
- Vacuum floorboards
- Restock all your car essentials (wipes, hand sanitizer, emergency products, etc.)
- Replace car fresheners
Whew! If you made it through the entire cleaning routine, then I truly commend you. I know cleaning your home isn’t always the most exciting thing to do, but it is one of the most fulfilling things to me personally. Nothing makes me happier than after a long day of work, to come back to a clean and cozy home.
I hope we can all agree and stick to this New Year resolution of keeping a clean home! Don’t forget to download the free Deep-Clean Checklist template to help keep you on track.
Happy New Year!
